-Remember, sudden cigarette cravings typically last no more than five minutes. Wait it out! Distract yourself with something else that does not involve food. Do not trade one addiction for another.

-Nicotine cravings will become more manageable with each passing success of not smoking. Again, Wait it out!

-Try to go on a walk or exercise when you have a craving. Do 30+ jumping jacks, push ups and or sit ups to pass the time.

-Avoid other people that are smoking at all costs! Don’t torture yourself.

-Try to completely eliminate alcohol while trying to quit smoking. Alcohol will break down your defenses and make it easier for you to cheat. If you want to quit, you can’t cheat.

-Drink plenty of fresh filtered or natural spring water daily. Tap water contains chemicals and hormones your body does not need. Drink at least half your body weight in ounces per day, ex: 140 lbs. = 70 ounces.

-Increase the amount of raw fruits, vegetables and fiber in your diet. This will help eliminated toxins and aid in healing throughout the body while increasing your overall health and mood.

-Drinking some form of GREENS each day will help increase mood, nutrition, elimination of toxins and heavy metals, improve digestion and skin etc….             Greens = Green Smoothies, Wheat Grass, Spirulina, Chlorophyll….

-Eliminate saturated fats, processed foods, and refined sugars from the diet.

-Consider a colon and/or liver cleanse.

-Avoid excess stress during the quitting process since stress is a trigger for most addictions.

-Surround yourself with a positive support group that will help encourage you and not peer pressure you. Family and Friends should be aware of your goal and be supportive, not negative. Children are great for this! They can be your number one fan club so let them cheer you on. Surround yourself with like minded people; if you want to quit smoking be around those that don’t smoke.

-Quit smoking for a reason or say 20 reasons, but know what they are and why they are important to you. Visualize your goals and post them up around you throughout the day. Sticky notes with affirmations, being able to run with your dog again, play ball with your children… Know your goals and repeat them throughout the day.

-Don’t be hard on yourself; instead, congratulate yourself with each new day, hour or minute you have been able to go without smoking! Each day will become easier with a positive frame of mind.

After quitting smoking, the lungs must be given adequate time to heal and regenerate. During this time, it is important to be very careful about one’s environment and the surrounding conditions.

-Wear a mask when working with strong chemicals (cleaning products, paint/spray paint, fertilizers, bleach, even hair products like hair spray, etc…)
-Avoid air filters that emit ozone into the air. They may damage the lungs more.
-Do not attempt to dry up lung mucous. Mucous is the body’s way of expelling toxins from the lungs.
-Avoid second-hand smoke at all costs, as well as other strong toxic chemical odors.
-Avoid dairy foods since they produce excess mucous. Mucous producing foods place added stress on the lungs. Other producers of mucus and inflammation; gluten, sugar, high fructose corn syrup…
-Aromatic herbs such as rosemary, thyme, ginger, horse radish, and cayenne may help one feel better.
-Get lots of fresh air and outdoor exercise every day. Exercise strengthens the heart and lungs and improves the immune system.  Note: Indoor exercise may be necessary during high allergy seasons, if you are affected, and during severely cold seasons when cold air can exacerbate sensitive lungs.
-Yoga is also helpful since it encourages deep breathing, promotes relaxation and reduces heart rate.

For every cigarette smoked, over 4,000 toxic chemicals are inhaled into the body. Over forty of these chemicals have been directly linked to cancer. Nicotine is one such chemical and is considered extremely addictive because it facilitates the natural release of serotonin, dopamine, and nor epinephrine. In so doing, it also stimulates the production of adrenaline, which elevates blood pressure and heart rate.
